There is a place where penguins live at the equator, lizards swim in the ocean, and giant tortoises wander across volcanic islands.

Can You Read Galápagos National Park? invites your family to explore one of the most extraordinary places on Earth, where wildlife evolved in ways found nowhere else. Featuring museum-quality illustrations by Megan Scott Scripps, this book combines poetic storytelling with just enough real science to reveal how volcanoes built these islands, how animals adapted to life in isolation, and why the Galápagos continues to inspire explorers, scientists, and nature lovers from around the world.

Discover an island world unlike any other, where giant tortoises roam ancient volcanic landscapes, blue-footed boobies perform elaborate dances, and marine iguanas dive beneath the waves to graze on underwater algae. Explore lava tunnels, mangrove forests, cloud-covered highlands, and coral-rich seas while meeting the remarkable creatures that helped shape our understanding of evolution. Through poetic verse, vivid illustrations, and fascinating real-world facts, this book reveals the science of volcanoes, adaptation, island ecosystems, and biodiversity. A celebration of curiosity, discovery, and the wonder of life on Earth, it invites readers to experience the Galápagos as one of nature's greatest living laboratories.

Meet the Artist:

Megan Scott Scripps

Growing up far from the woods, I always felt
drawn to the wild places of the world. Today,
my family and I are grateful to call the mountains
of Virginia home, where our days are filled with
hiking, camping, foraging, and creating. Nature
deeply shapes my work—not only the sweeping
mountains and forests, I also love the quiet
details often overlooked: clusters of mushrooms
on a fallen stump, weathered bark, or
misunderstood creatures essential to a healthy
ecosystem.

Through my art, I hope to
encourage a deeper appreciation for the
beauty and importance of the natural world.
While painting remains my primary focus, I
also work in many other mediums. This book
is part of an ongoing series celebrating
nature through the eyes of different
artists, with a shared mission of
encouraging conservation and
connection to the earth. Every
purchase helps support efforts to
protect our planet and preserve
its wild places for future
generations. I truly hope these
illustrations remind young
readers that nature belongs
to all of us, and you too
can read nature!
