Three hundred million years ago, Colorado was covered by a warm, shallow sea. Today, its ancient seafloor rises hundreds of feet into the air.

Can You Read Garden of the Gods? invites your family into one of America's most extraordinary landscapes, where towering red sandstone spires, balancing rocks, and hidden stories reveal the power of time. Featuring museum-quality illustrations by Brittany Pratt, this book blends poetic storytelling with just enough real science to uncover how mountains rise, rocks tilt toward the sky, and wildlife thrives among the formations. It's an unforgettable adventure through one of nature's greatest works of art.

Discover how an ancient seafloor became one of America's most spectacular landscapes. Explore towering sandstone formations like Balanced Rock, Kissing Camels, and the Cathedral Spires while uncovering the forces that shaped them over hundreds of millions of years. Meet the plants and animals that call this rugged environment home, from bighorn sheep and prairie dogs to piñon pines, yucca flowers, and soaring red-tailed hawks. Through poetic verse, vivid illustrations, and fascinating real-world facts, this book reveals the science of geology, erosion, ecosystems, and deep time. A celebration of wonder, discovery, and stewardship, it invites readers to see Garden of the Gods as a place where Earth's history rises dramatically from the ground beneath our feet.

Meet the Artist:

Brittany Pratt

With Bachelors Degrees in Art and Psychology, and as a former tour guide in the surrounding areas near Garden of the Gods, I have seen first hand how spending time outdoors and in nature helps both young and old minds feel more calm, confident, and at peace.

I have fond memories of exploring Garden of the Gods. I remember warm picnics in the park as a child, and rock climbing with friends as a young adult. Garden of the Gods is truly a one of a kind gem on our beautiful Earth.

I have created art, mostly watercolor paintings, since I could hold a pen and have sold my art under the title “Miss B’s Sundries” since 2020. With every piece I paint I hope to spread a little magic and wonder to those around me. My hope is that you, the reader, will also find that wonder as you explore the pages of these books and embrace the great outdoors.
