Look closer

Every spread reveals a new trail to explore.

Follow the water. Discover waterfalls, mossy ravines, and streams that shaped the sandstone cliffs of Hocking Hills.

Meet the trail neighbors. Look for woodland birds, salamanders, deer, and the small lives tucked into every corner of the forest.

Meet the artist

Katie Coffman

Artist, storyteller, and lover of Ohio’s wild places

“I wanted each page to feel like finding a new trail, a hidden waterfall, or a quiet place to wonder.”

Hello I'm Katie, the artist behind these illustrations. I am an illustrator and surface pattern designer. From an early age nature brought me peace and comfort and it is a recurrent theme in my work. You could often find me with my toes in the mud under the shade of a tree.

Our family has visited Hocking Hills so many times, it is now a favorite place of wonder and beauty for all of us. Hocking Hills was even where my husband and I had our first date.

Now a mother of five wonderful boys, I strive to encourage them to find as much enjoyment from nature as I do, and learn everything they can about our natural wonders.

I hope that these pictures help you hear the rush of the water, feel the cool darkness of the caves, and experience the rough beauty that Hocking Hills State Park has to offer!
Revisiting and sharing some of my favorite
locations through the illustration of this book has been amazing!

Katie’s illustrations invite families to slow down, look closer, and find adventure in the landscapes close to home.
