Amy Hayre

Artist, storyteller, and lifelong nature observer

“I wanted families to feel the hush of Killarney—the mist on the lakes, the movement in the forest, and the wild lives all around us.”

Nature has been at the heart of my life for as long as I can remember. From childhood adventures outdoors to traveling through Mexico, Spain, Ireland and across the United States, I have always been drawn to the beauty of the natural world and the stories within it.

My visit to Killarney National Park left a lasting impression on me. Its forests, lakes, and winding paths had a magic all their own, and I hope that comes through in these illustrations.

My artwork is typically shaped by two things: nature and the old storytelling traditions that have grown from it. I’m often inspired by the way traditional folk tales reflect the changing seasons along with the small details found throughout the natural world. These stories remind me to slow down, pay attention, and appreciate what’s right in front of me.

While I often work in block printing, watercolor, and ink, I chose digital illustration for this project to capture Killarney´s atmosphere in a different way. Whether depicting sweeping landscapes such as MacGillycuddy´s Reeks or something tiny and easily overlooked like the Kerry slug, I hope to spark curiosity and appreciation for all parts of nature.

A deep love of nature shapes both my artwork and my everyday life. In Wisconsin, I share that connection with my husband, our five children, and our energetic family dogs. Creativity, storytelling, and muddy outdoor adventures fill our days, and we spend as much time as we can exploring the outdoors together and searching for new places to discover.

Amy’s illustrations invite families to slow down, look closer, and discover the living wonder of Killarney.
