Meet the artist
Lila Tomczak
Artist, storyteller, and lifelong trail wanderer
“I wanted every page to feel like a step along the trail—full of fresh air, changing light, and small discoveries.”
Illustrating the Superior Hiking Trail book has been such a fun way to connect the two biggest parts of who I am: an artist, and an outdoor enthusiast. Growing up I was always on my bike or rollerblades, or catching tadpoles down by the river. As an adult, I am happy to report, not much has changed!
Nature has always been my biggest source of inspiration and it shows in every project that I do. Whether it be painting a portrait or mural, weaving a basket, mending clothes, or designing a tattoo, my work is consumed by leaves, trees, sunsets, and attempts to capture the peaceful and grounded feeling I get when I spend time outside.
I chose the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT) as my topic because of my personal experience and love for backpacking. I completed a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2018 and the SHT in 2019. I have learned so much more about the North Shore of Lake Superior since finishing this book that it makes me want to hike it again! As a WildStork artist I hope my artwork inspires people to prioritize spending time outdoors and sharing what they’ve experienced so we may all learn to be better stewards of the land.
Lila’s illustrations invite families to slow down, follow the path, and notice the living world along the way.
