The largest living things on earth are standing in California. And they've been there for three thousand years.

Can You Read Sequoia National Park? invites you into the cathedral groves of the Sierra Nevada, where ancient giants, black bears, and the quiet scale of deep time make every visit feel like a privilege. The book shares Museum-quality illustrations by Mauricio Santamaria, plus poetic verse and just enough real science for your whole family to want to plan their next adventure.

Discover what it means to stand in the presence of the oldest and largest living things on Earth, giant sequoia trees. Walk among colossal ancient trunks, explore the remarkable survival strategies of creatures from black bears to chickarees, and learn how fire, long feared and misunderstood, is actually the secret force behind the sequoia's renewal. Through poetic verse, vivid illustrations, and fascinating real-world facts, this book reveals the science of giant tree biology, fire ecology, and mountain ecosystems. A celebration of scale and resilience, it invites readers to see the sequoia forest as nature's most humbling reminder that some things are worth protecting forever.

Meet the artist:

Mauricio Santamaria

Hello! I’m Mauricio Santamaria-artist, teacher, and from Chicago. I draw inspiration from all
my surroundings, even things as common as my daily commute or a classroom I sit in during my break.

I enjoy telling stories in every capacity. Painting grants me a space to play with the life around me and to share it with others in a way that connects them to their own.

Art and nature have provided me with growth and healing. In a world that retreats into all our digital boxes for fast and
immediate content, I think it is important to look to nature and be reminded of beauty that comes from the slow and gradual.

I hope these pages inspire you to preserve the life around you and the artist within you.
